I got an email recently from someone wanting to organize a volunteer day this coming August at the 'Urban Oasis'. Apparently back in the late 90s there had been a volunteer extravaganza on St. Elizabeth's Campus at a community garden created for the Barry Farm community...
I'd love to help organize a volunteer day for 2010, except I had no idea there was a community garden on St. E's campus dedicated to Barry Farm. According to the Cultural Landscape Report released as part of DHS's masterplan package, in 2002 there was record of a community garden program near the greenhouses of 'unit 3' (pictured below). Produce from the garden crops was sold at the Fresh Vegetable Market at the Josephene Butler Parks Center. However, according to this report, the garden is no longer in existence. Can anyone confirm? I'm assuming DHS squashed the garden, if it still existed, but regardless, inquiring minds want to know.
Update: Apparently, the community garden on St. Elizabeth's campus does indeed still exist and volunteers interested in working there should contact DPR Environmental Education Specialist Kelly Melsted. I'm shooting her an email now to see what's up.
As an fyi, there is a Barry Farm Community Garden, with 5 shallow vegetable beds over by the rec center at 1230 Sumner Rd SE. That garden was planted in June 2009 as part of DPR's Beautification Day and is looking to be adopted by local community members in the Barry Farm area in 2010. Anyone interested?
