The Bag Tax

WaPo did a story on the recently enacted bag tax at the end of January.  It appears that people are for the most part adapting.  The bag pictured above is an image of one of the bags I bought at the Container Store for my shopping purposes.  I have 3, they were $3.99 a piece and are amazing. (17-3/4" x 7-3/4" x 17-3/4" h, durable, water-resistant, zipper closure, square bottom--like a paper bag, hold a lot of freakn groceries).

But I digress, as much as I support the bag tax, lately, I haven't been the happiest camper since several businesses have automatically been charging me 5 cents, whether I get a bag or not.

Case in point...

This weekend, I went to Subway and even after already mentioning that I didn't need a bag for the sandwich, watched the clerk give me a bag and automatically charge me for the bag.  I removed the sandwich from the bag and gave the clerk my money, minus 5 cents.  He sighed heavily and complained about having to re-do the sale, but come on...I told you I didn't want the stupid bag.

Today at lunch, same thing at Corner Bakery.  I said no bag, and once again, the clerk charges me anyway...except this time, doesn't give me the bag.  I guess I have to laugh, she heard me say I didn't want the bag, but it makes me wonder, was she so used to charging people that she did it anyway, or are the cashier systems rigged to automatically charge customers for the bag?

Your experiences/comments appreciated.
